Formed in 2013, Shumba ye Moyo take a modern approach to the reinterpretation of African music. With source material from Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi and the Kingdom of eSwatini (Swaziland), this is vibrant chamber music, both traditional and new.

Much of the music is instrumental and driven by musical phrases. Individual parts lock together in layered grooves that rise and fall, building dense textures inside pulsing grooves. The timbres are mostly acoustic, often with mbira at the fore. Structural developments are subtle and constructed through variation and improvisation.

While each musician is entirely comfortable in their own sound world, the combination of parts builds a complex tapestry of interwoven, interdependent joyful chamber music. Though firmly settled in African soil, the band’s music also shows the influence of our homelands and lands of travel—so the instruments and music of Cuba, Bangladesh, North America and Scandanavia also reference the band’s sound.
