Erhu in the Kampung

Join Kwuan Boon, James and Eugene on their special journey into the world of Malay music right on the festive day of Hari Raya Puasa as they perform their rendition of familiar Singapore Malay folk tunes like Dayung Sampan and Semoga Bahagia, as well as songs by the amazing P. Ramlee, such as Getaran Jiwa and Ibu. Don’t miss this fusion experience where these Malay songs are presented using the Chinese erhu, alongside the guitar and keyboard.
About Lim Kwuan Boon
Lim picked up the erhu when he joined Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra in 2002. He held several key positions in many orchestras, such as bowed string sectional leader and concert master, and is one of the founders and the Quartet Master of the Chinese string quartet, Stringanza. He was also the Associate Principal for Bowed Strings Section for Ding Yi Music Company from 2010 to 2016, as well as a member of the SAF Music and Drama Company.
Under the tutelage of both Wong Sun Tat and Shen Qin, Lim obtained his diploma in erhu performance in 2007 and won the second prize in the biennial National Chinese Music Competition erhu open category in 2010 and 2016. Currently, he has performed in more than 60 concerts, and has staged several solo and concerto performances with various orchestras. Notably, he staged his first recital together with two other musicians from Ding Yi Music Company in 2013 at the Esplanade Recital Studio. He has performed locally, as well as overseas in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Germany and Uzbekistan.
About James Fernando
Fernando has been active in the Top 40 cover music scene since 2012, and currently plays acoustic sets at various entertainment venues in Singapore. He was also a sessionist for the debut EP launch of Singapore pop rock band Suasion. Drawing on various genres such as pop rock, progressive metal and blues among others, he blends these influences and brings them out in his playing on both the electric and acoustic guitar, creating ambience and taking the occasional lead, adding more unique colours and a modern edge to the music.
Fernando graduated with a Diploma in Songwriting and Production from School of Music and The Arts. Since late 2011, his YouTube channel “jrffite” has garnered over a million accumulative views.
About Eugene Ang
Ang started his musical journey playing classical piano. His love for jazz began during his years in college at Carnegie Mellon University. He has played at Singapore events such as the Mosaic Music Festival, Huayi – Chinese Festival of Arts and CHIJazz, as well as various festivals in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and China. Ang has recorded two albums with international jazz band Mellow Motif, of which he was a founding member. Mellow Motif has made appearances on MTV, PBS and CNNgo. He has released a duo album with flautist Rit Xu entitled On a Little Street in Singapore: A Jazzy Conversation. Ang actively performs, composes and arranges in Singapore. More details Less details
