Kopi for One: From Page to Stage
16 Jul 2018, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
From Page to Stage- A lecture recital
L’arietta Productions welcomes opera lovers to the unveiling of Dr. Chen Zhangyi’s latest chamber opera, Kopi for One. Set in a kopitiam run by a charming kaypoh waitress, father and daughter bond and try to rekindle their relationship over a cup of kopi. The creative team will share the origins of the story, explore its musical themes, and the compositional process in the cozy setting of the Blue Room at the Arts House. Don’t miss excerpts from the opera and the reveal of the hero images by Alvin Mark Tan, the collaborating visual artist. Come get a sneak peak on July 16th 7:30pm, and find out all of its hidden messages!
A new commission for L’arietta Productions’ Homegrown Season, Kopi for One opens with the kopi aunty welcoming a girl who has returned after a long time away. All grown up from her milo dinosaur days, she orders a kopi-o gao kosong and they reminisce about her childhood. The father arrives and the waitress encourages him to tell his daughter how much he loves her. In a culture where love is shown with actions instead of with words, do we really say what we want to our closest ones? Can a cup of kopi save their relationship?
Dr. Chen Zhangyi, Composer: The music of Chen Zhangyi has been described by BBC Radio 3 as “music from a voice of the future.” His dramatic works such as Pursuant, Laksa Cantata, and Window Shopping explore the musical representation of local urbanism, vernacular language and culture. In his other works, nature is often a source of inspiration, such as Rain Tree, and 'of an ethereal symphony' commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for their 2016 Europe tour. In 2014, he was conferred the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council, and Zhangyi currently serves as Assistant Professor of Composition Studies at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Jack Lin, Librettist: Throughout Jack’s career he has been engaged as a violinist with orchestras around the world, as a music educator, and also as a freelance writer for music journals, and finally as a librettist. As a writer, Mr. Lin has published articles for musical journals in the United States, including Strings Magazine and the Conductor’s Guild of America. Since residing in Singapore, he has collaborated with award-winning composer Chen Zhangyi on two chamber operas as librettist in Laksa Cantata (2013) and Window Shopping (2014).
Singapore Trilogy will premiere October 12th-14th at the Arts House, the three chamber operas pay homage to our national obsessions - food and shopping. Kopi for One, Laksa Cantata, and Window Shopping follows a woman as she reflects on her life as a daughter, wife, career woman, and the relationships she has between her father, fiancé and herself.
