Polkadot + Moonbeam: Bear on a Bicycle
14 Jul 2018, 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM
That humble Hawaiian instrument, the ukulele, has been experiencing a renaissance in recent times, fueled no doubt by the YouTube phenomenon, on which ukuleleists of all ilks showcase their skills. As the duo Polkadot + Moonbeam, Juliet Pang and Didi Mudigdo steer the ukulele into jazz waters, featuring this versatile little instrument on four-string swing renditions of Cole Porter, The Gershwins and Duke Ellington. On July 14th, they will feature this unique sound and premiere new originals at Singapore’s hip new hangout, Room 2F.
Named after Frank Sinatra’s first hit song with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1940, Polkadot + Moonbeam was formed in 2010 in Sydney, when Juliet first met Didi. At the time, Juliet had been a successful recording artist in Singapore, while Didi had just returned to Sydney from a four-year adventure of performing around Asia. Discovering their common love for the uke and jazz classics when they met, they then formed Polkadot + Moonbeam. Together, they developed a signature ukulele jazz sound, beefed up by acoustic bass and tight vocal harmonies, a sound which they have since successfully toured around Australia, Japan, China and Southeast Asia.
Juliet and Didi have also been recently collaborating on new compositions. They now have a solid collection of original songs that tell their personal stories, one of which they chose to name the current tour: 'Bear on a Bicycle'. This and other new original songs will be premiered in Singapore, Taipei and Perth in July/August 2018, alongside their repertoire of jazz standards.
