About Catholic High School Symphony Band
The Catholic High School Symphony Band (CHSSB) has a long and rich history. Before 1966, the band was a patrol band and a brass band until its transition in 1966 to a military band in time for the 1st National Day Parade. The band performed regularly at the National Day Parades in the early years of Singapore's independence, and Singapore's current Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, was the drum major of the band then.
The band was renamed the CHS Symphony Band under the baton of Tan Yiang Hoon in 1999. Under her care, the Symphony Band brought home the school's first Gold award in the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) in over 30 years. The band won several more Gold awards in 2001 and 2003, as well as the Gold With Honours award in 2005.
Since 2008, the band has flourished under the guidance of Leonard Tan and David Glosz, and is currently under the direction of Adrian Chiang. They have taken part in musical exchanges, competitions and various performances in Singapore and abroad and, in the 2017 SYF Arts Presentation, achieved a Distinction for outstanding performance.
About Singapore Polytechnic Symphonic Band
Singapore Polytechnic Symphonic Band (SPSB) has a remarkable history, dating back to 1972 when it began as a six-person brass band. As membership grew, it evolved into a military band, which then gave root to its current form as a large symphonic band. After more than SPSB boasts more than a hundred musicians today. The band is currently led by Adrian Chiang and is guided by a team of tutors and supported by a network of strong alumni.
SPSB is active in embarking on regional and international projects. The band has made several overseas trips such as cultural immersion programmes to Thailand (2002), Australia (2004), Japan (2007), and Korea (2011). Most recently, in March 2017, they returned to Japan to interact with and perform alongside fellow musicians from the Tokai University Shizuoka Shoyo Junior & Senior High School. SPSB also takes pride in giving back to the community, supporting various local beneficiaries such as Fei Yue Student Care and YMCA Singapore. Most notably, it has a long-standing relationship with Muhajirin Mosque to help give out food hampers during Ramadan.
