Learning is an improvisational set by Singapore artist-musician Lai Yu Tong (cosmologists). The set will combine ideas and sounds from original compositions written and recorded over the past three years. These improvised works document his explorations as an amateur self-taught musician learning various instruments (guitar, piano, synthesisers) intuitively.
For Yu Tong, the process of learning an instrument carries much compositional value and can be seen within itself as a form of improvisation. His improvisations often incorporate the space for mistakes, presenting them faithfully as part of each composition, and part of the process of learning. However, learning tends to happen only for a limited time before one eventually becomes comfortable or good at something. Yu Tong’s musical work is thus a constant process of trying to learn, whilst also learning to unlearn.
About the artistTrained as a visual artist, Yu Tong spends most days in the studio and most nights at home playing music. His practices converge around an interest in everyday motions, rhythms and problems. He has previously presented several durational performances, most notably a 12-hour solo guitar improvisation set performed overnight at DECK in 2016. He has also performed in gigs and performance events organised by local experimental label Ujikaji, as well as at The Substation, Esplanade, and soft/WALL/studs. cosmologists is a project that is not confined to genres, focusing instead on creating an autobiographical recording of the artist’s daily life.
