Bukit Ho Swee: A Musical Journey through Chinese Chamber Music

6 Jul 2018, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Embark on a musical journey and explore a slice of Singapore history through the story of Bukit Ho Swee.

Ah Ho is a wide-eyed boy whose laid-back life is transformed when a city girl Ah Swee moves in to the kampong. A chance encounter leads to an exploration of the colourful village life. As the two youngsters draw closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles. Will they both learn to treasure the wonders and charm of Bukit Ho Swee? Will a fiery crisis razing through the village engulf their friendship?

Listen out to the varied music styles in this story told through Chinese chamber music, particularly inspired by three Chinese dialect groups commonly found in Singapore: Cantonese, Hokkien and Teochew.

Join the musicians of Ding Yi Music Company as they bring you a live music performance accompanied by theatre, singing, and engaging multimedia. Composed by Phang Kok Jun and directed by Danny Yeo, this immersive experience will allow students to not only better understand Chinese chamber music, but also learn about local history, personal bravery, and the importance of community spirit.

This production is co-produced by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and Ding Yi Music Company.
