In this East-meets-West-fusion-themed concert, look forward to a selection of classics performed by the People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra (PAYCO). Get to hear Strauss’s Auf der Jagd (Polka), one of the top classic Chinese Orchestra pieces Shi Mian Mai Fu and Ravel’s Pavane pour une infant défunte, a composition that expresses a nostalgic enthusiasm for Spanish customs and sensibilities.
The People’s Association Youth Chinese Orchestra (PAYCO) was established in 1981 and is part of the PA Talents group of orchestras. Besides nurturing young music talents in performing Chinese music, PAYCO also specialises in presenting Singapore’s multi-cultural diversity through Chinese musical instrument. Besides its biennial concerts, the Orchestra performs regularly at national events such as Singapore Arts Festival, Chinese Cultural Festival and Chingay Parade. It has also performed abroad in Japan, Brunei, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The orchestra also hopes to introduce Chinese orchestral music that is both classic and modern into more young people’s lives. The Orchestra currently performs under Music Director / Conductor, Ng Seng Hong. Its instructor includes Chua Seng Chee, Teo Choo Hwa and Chin Yen Chien.
