Spend an enchanting evening with rising stars Zhang Jie, Cherie Tse, Chieko Sato, Zerlina Tan and Alvin Tan from the Singapore Lyric Opera – Leow Siak Fah Artists Training Programme, and the Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus as they perform a selection of operatic works that speak of love and the heart’s desires, including La ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and Pa-pa-pa from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus

The Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO) Chorus was established in 1990. A leading chorus in Singapore, it remains the backbone of SLO productions, aims to be a chorus of excellence and strives to set the bar of standard and quality. SLO also provides opportunities for chorus members to understudy and play roles in all productions, and participates in outreach programmes to share the joy of making music.

SLO – Leow Siak Fah Artists Training Programme Singers

In remembrance of their Founding Chairman the late Leow Siak Fah who passed away in April 2015, Singapore Lyric Opera initiated the SLO – Leow Siak Fah Artists Training Programme. This is a performance-based training programme to support the artistic development of talented young singers, providing opportunities for them to hone their skills and gain experience on the professional stage. This programme is supported through SLO’s fundraising efforts.

Zhang Jie (Soprano)

Soprano Zhang Jie graduated from the Xing Hai Conservatory of Music where she studied voice as her major. She was taught by Professor Li Ning and Professor Zhou Xiao Yin. In recent years, she has also continued her studies with Nancy Yuen in Singapore. Zhang Jie actively performs in local concerts and competitions. She won the second prize in the open category of the SLO-ASEAN Vocal Competition held in 2016 and other awards in the Singapore Vocal Competition and the Singapore-Malaysia Vocal Competition in 2004.

Cherie Tse (Soprano)

Cherie Tse is a soprano who studied under Lim Shieh Yih, Jessica Chen, Eiddwen Harrhy, Janis Kelly, Vladimir Chernov, Olga Toporkova, Patricia Bardon, Robert Winter and Nicholas Cleobury. Cherie graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a distinction in Diploma in Music, and recently completed her bachelor degree at the Royal College of Music (London). She has performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Lyric Opera, Mus'Art Wind Orchestra, Philharmonic Winds, NAFA's New Music Ensemble, and Chamber Sounds, and has performed in concerts, operas and operettas locally and overseas.

Chieko Sato (Mezzo-soprano)

Although she has been a long-time opera lover, Chieko only discovered her passion for singing in recent years. She began her vocal training with soprano Satsuki Nagatome, and was invited to sing solos, duets and chorus pieces in Satsuki's May Breezes productions in 2013, 2014 and 2016.  Recently, she began working with acclaimed bass-baritone Huang Rong Hai. Chieko is a founding member of the opera outreach group Scherzo, with whom she has performed works from a repertoire spanning Baroque to 19th century, at the Esplanade library in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and a celebration of Spanish music in 2017. Chieko joined the Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus in 2015, and the Leow Siak Fah Artists Training Programme in 2017.

Zerlina Tan (Mezzo-soprano)

Zerlina Tan began her studies at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2012. She recently completed her Bachelor in Music (Honours) degree from the Royal College of Music (RCM), London, under the tutelage of Dr Jessica Chen. An enthusiastic and active performer, she has sung as a soloist and in choruses for various performances on both local and international stages. Zerlina has had opportunities to perform as a soloist overseas in collaboration concerts and international platforms. She has worked with renowned baritone Vladimir Chernov, Olga Sergevna, Rakafet Hak (University of California Los Angeles), Robert Winter (UCLA), Nicholas Sears (RCM), mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon (RCM), sopranos Janis Kelly and Eiddwen Harrhy (RCM), tenor Lim Shieh Yih, as well as Nicholas Cleobury (Queensland Conservatorium).

Alvin Tan (Baritone)

Alvin Tan received his music degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, after obtaining business-related degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was the producer and the original founder of the company that created the LKY Musical staged in 2015. Alvin was awarded the Edwin Barlow Scholarship after winning first price at the National Association of Teachers Voice Competition. He was also awarded the Shell Foundation Bursary from Singapore National Arts Council, and was an honorary award winner in NDTV International Vocal Competition in New York City. In 2016, he won Best Singaporean Artist Award and Third Prize overall in the 2016 SLO-ASEAN Voice Competition.
