The Poetry in Life ~ Schumann, Adès, Brahms Concerts for Children

19 May 2018, 10:00 AM - 10:50 AM

"My daughter loved the concert, as did her friends who were there with her. Thank you so much for making classical music so appealing to the little ones!"Parent

The Poetry in Life ~ Schumann, Adès, Brahms is an exploration of Schumann’s literary life that spilled wholeheartedly into his musical creative output in songs, solo piano music and chamber music; a look into the works of his prolific parallel, the contemporary British composer Thomas Adès, who was also born to a poet and for whom the intertwining of literature and music comes so naturally; and which closes with the musical poetry found in the mature and late years of Brahms, a younger German Romantic discovered at age 20 and hailed by Schumann himself as the ‘chosen one’.

For young ones who are just starting out, we have two specially designed interactive Concerts for Children the morning of 19 May. Send them off to a 50-minute session of fun and learning with these international artists and a great facilitator!

10am for ages 0–6

Discover the special timbres, textures, and unique sound world of Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet, a work fashioned by this German master after Mozart’s own sublime Clarinet Quintet, written a hundred years before.

"The fact that most people do not understand and respect the very best things, such as Mozart’s concertos, is what permits men like us to become famous."Johannes Brahms

12noon for ages 6–12

Explore the expressive poetry in Schumann’s beloved song cycle Frauen-Liebe und Leben Op. 42 (Woman’s Love and Life) and admire how he wove his own musical creations into the fabric of these Romantic poems.
