Dvorak      Stabat Mater, Op. 58

The Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra & The Joy Chorale present Antonin Dvorak’s setting of the 13th Century poem Stabat Mater – a monumental 10-movement work for symphony orchestra, chorus and four soloists undertaken at a time of great personal tragedy for the composer after the death of his oldest daughter. Turning to this ancient text, the grieving Dvorak identified closely with its poetic evocation of Mary’s pain at the death of her son, portraying the depths of parental love and pain that he could relate at a most personal level. This deeply moving and powerfully evocative music that captures both personal and religious aspects of grief and solace has exhilarated audiences since its premiere, rightfully earning its place as one of the towering masterpieces of choral music.
