Esplanade presents Gemadah - A Traditional Malay Music Festival supported by National Arts Council, marking the successful revival of vanishing Malay music forms with a showcase of one of the biggest collaborations between the top talents of homegrown Malay music ensembles.

Workshop: Cinta, Cipta Dan Citarasa by Zubir Abdullah

Time: 2pm & 8pm (1 hour, no intermission)

Synopsis: Sample some lively traditional Malay music at Esplanade. Street musicians perform their spirited and energetic renditions of classic Malay songs around the centre, bound to capture the charm of the good old days. Catch them at locations all over Esplanade!

Madrasah Aljunied Angklung Ensemble

Venue: Esplanade Concourse

Time: 3pm & 4pm (30 mins each)

Synopsis: The students from Madrasah Aljunied Angklung Ensemble present a repertoire of nostalgic folk tunes from the Malay Archipelago as well as songs by the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee. With old favourites including Di Tanjong Katong, Bengawan Solo and Alhamdulillah from Ali Baba Bujang Lapok, the ensemble looks set to bring you back in time.

The Modern Ensemble by Djoko Mangkrengg Performing Arts

Venue: Esplanade Concourse

Synopsis: The Modern Ensemble, who specialises in playing Indonesian instruments such as the angklung, kulintang and gamelan, presents a contemporary sound that combines their instruments with western strings and percussion.

GALA GEMADAH by Dzul Rabull Jalil, Aidil Akmal, Azrin Abdullah, Al Hafiz Jamat and Fadhli Ramlee

Venue: Esplanade Outdoor Theatre

Time: 9pm

Synopsis: The day of festivities at GEMADAH – Traditional Malay Music Festival concludes with an outdoor gala concert, marking the successful revival of vanishing Malay music forms with a showcase of one of the biggest collaborations between the top talents of homegrown Malay music ensembles.

Listen to the lush tunes and intricate beats of folk and traditional syncretic music of the Malay asli orchestra. Notable music arrangers including Dzul Rabull Jalil, Aidil Akmal, Azrin Abdullah, Al Hafiz Jamat and Fadhli Ramlee present a plethora of songs, of genres such as inang, ghazal and zapin.

With a combined orchestra consisting of musicians from AltoAura, D’Classique, Gendang Akustika, Nobat Kota Singa, Orkes Mutiara, Orkestra Sri Temasek, Sinar Fusika and Sri Mahligai, expect a gala concert that will be nothing short of breathtaking.
