Limelight 2018 by Temasek Junior College Symphonic Band
7 May 2018, 7:30 PM - 8:50 PM
Join the Temasek Junior College (TJC) Symphonic Band for its inaugural full concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall, a culmination of the band’s musical endeavours, achievements and years of musical excellence.
The Temasek Junior College Symphonic Band was established in 1977 for students to express their interest and love for music. Rich in tradition and with a dedicated alumni, the band maintains a high standard of excellence driven by commitment, dedication and sheer passion of its students and resident conductor, Mr Alex Lin Ah Leck. The band bagged its 14th Gold Award in the 2007 SYF and a much-coveted Gold with Honours Award in the same competition in 2005. Such excellent results are maintained at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation from 2013 to 2017, where the band was awarded the highest accolade, a Certificate of Distinction. The band has also done consistently well in both local and regional competitions. In 2014, the band was awarded the 2nd Runner-Up in the Open Division of the Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF). In 2012, the band clinched the Gold award in the First Division of the same festival, and was also one of the top three bands in that category.
Since 2013, the band has expanded in membership with more than sixty students from the Integrated Programme (IP) Year 1 to 4, led by conductor Mr. Tan Yao Cong, an alumnus of TJC Symphonic Band. The IP Band, together with the JC Band, has consistently staged sold-out concerts at venues such as the Victoria Concert Hall and Singapore Conference Hall. In 2017, the IP Band took part in its first Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation and attained the Certificate of Distinction.
Under the baton of Mr Alex Lin and Mr Tan Yao Cong, the band will be performing a wide-ranging repertoire with pieces such as Arsenal and Alvamar Overture, Yo Goto’s arrangement of Puccini’s Opera, Turandot, folk-like pastorale tunes of Thomas Doss’ Legends of Green in Gold and the soundtrack to the classic Dreamworks animation, How to Train Your Dragon.
