Born and raised in Singapore. DJ and producer Jean Reiki was a vinyl-collector who stumbled upon Hard Hops and Nu-Skool Breaks at the tail-end of the 90s. Her style of DJing gradually developed, resulting in a wide gamut of musical genres in her sets and cemented her a place at London's Point Blank Top Female DJs and Ones To Watch for 2012.
Since her first club appearance in Phuture (Zouk) and her debut promo mixset entitled Equlibrium 001: Dawn of Breaks, she has quarterly mixshow residency on Lush 99.5 FM radio and spun for leading events ranging from Wax On Wax Off, Full Steam Ahead, Singapura Dub Club, Under The Bridge to Zoukout. With a knack for dropping tunes that connect with the audience, she has performed alongside international DJs Storm, Applebottom as well as Post-Dubstep live act, SBTRKT + Sampha and Beatboxer, live looping artist, Dubfx. On top of that, her growing reputation earned her guest spots overseas where she headlined Breaks Centro & Flava Breaks in Kuala Lumpur, Salem Innovation Sessions, This is Music & Sessions HK in Hong Kong, Sound Element's 'Breakzelecta' in Bangkok and recently MoustacheMusic in Ghent, Belgium.
Over the years, her versatility has taken her beyond the club circuit. She continues to build up an extensive portfolio, spinning for the likes of JBL, Bose Soundsystem, Rayban, Tudor Watch, Mecedes Benz, Chivas, Facebook and Hewlett-Packard. In addition to that, her style attracted fashion apparels ranging from Adidas, Bally, Juicy Couture, M.A.C., Oo La Lab, YSL as well as scored her pro-audio endorsement deal with Avid.com, AKG headphones, Pendulumic, Denon and Native Instruments Traktor gear.
Apart from her music curation and solo work, she is no stranger to the DIY ethos of throwing quirky events. As 1/3 of DatDatDat, she co-runs and plays on ad hoc nights welcoming an array of guests to crank up a heady mix of party vibes. Under the #BASSBBQ umbrella, she brings together local and regional music peers for casual music Sunday get-together at secret locations. In recent times, she joined forces with New York Cellist and producer, Brent Arnold to pull off an experimental music workshop cum showcase for budding instrumentalists and budding producers at Kult Kafe. To date, Reiki is part of the SGCR production team which host live streaming radio shows to champion music and creative culture in Singapore.
Having ride through the crest and trough of electronic music trends, she threw out the genre rule book in 2013 and focused in building her music production portfolio with the flair of an experimentalist. Her compositions and remixes gained notable attention with her work featured in far corners of the world, from Nick Luscombe's Late Junction playlist on BBC Radio 3, The Shiso Room on FutureMusicFM, Copenhagen’s The Lake radio, Berlin’s Not Your Girlfriend show on BLM.FM, Hyper Juice show on Japan's Block FM, Stateside's Gizmodo and San Jose Museum of Art, producers showcase on Malaysia's Midnight Oil to local film trailer, 'Trash Heaven'. Other work has garnered her the 3rd spot at the Creative Destruction Contest organised by the Peranakan Museum Singapore and nominations for the 'Best Genre Bender' category at the Asia music awards, VIMA.
Always exploring new terrain, she has collaborated with ethnic instrumentalists, SA to herald improvisation over one another's material in Sonic Sessions Vol.1, a live performance streaming to an online audience via Stageit platform. In recent showcases, her sets have given the audiences a glimpse of how she uses STEMS and Native Instruments Traktor controllers to create seamless transition between original productions to remixes. Under the alias MIND OF THE COSMOS, her work is released through the Elevate label by Indigoism and has appeared in a VR installation at the recent Archifest. Merging Pendulumic Headphones, SubPac Technologies and MainStage Module, 2017 sees her staging Binaural X-perience and Sound Art performances in Stockholm and Berlin to explore audio entrainment in healthcare and therapy applications.
They say lyrics are the soul of a song, and it is the misheard lyrics of “Do it Again” by Chemical Brothers that sounded like “Durian” sparked off the music magic, hence the name DuriO.
DuriO is a founding member of BAOWBAOW, a duo Bass music collective and ATTAGIRL!, an all-girl non-profit collective. Her musical journey has taken her to DJ at various parties in Singapore, Malaysia, NYC, Tokyo, India and festivals like Zoukout, Keong Saik Carnival and Outlook Festival Japan among others.
Her current selections are Bass-centric genres under the UK Bass umbrella such as UK Garage, Grime, Jungle, and a touch of Reggae-Dancehall. However, she believes in not restricting herself to a particular genre and is ever evolving in her music game as she progresses.
