Details

For over 3,000 years, the guqin (seven-stringed Chinese zither) has captivated its listeners with its meditative, austere and mellow tones, said to have the ability to cleanse one’s mind and bring one closer in harmony with nature. The instrument is steeped in symbolism and meaning—in its music, physical construction and philosophy. Over centuries, guqin ideology developed from the confluence of Confucianist, Taoist and Buddhist influences. Some of its most celebrated pieces express the ideals of Taoist hermits and being in communion with nature, while others draw influence from Buddhist chants and states of serenity.
